The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday it has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, saying she provides a stark contrast to the "dangerous ideals" that have defined Republican candidate Donald Trump's campaign.
The endorsement of a presidential candidate is a first for the business organization, although it did endorse Clinton and Ohio Gov. John Kasich during the primary elections earlier this year. In a statement issued on its website, USHCC said it could not remain silent given "never before have the choices facing America been as stark as they are today."
"Two vastly divergent visions for the future are presented by the frontrunners of the leading parties in our country," USHCC said. "On one side, we have seen a candidate who has openly mocked and marginalized women, Hispanics, veterans, African-Americans, Muslims and the disabled, while turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to the dangerous undercurrents of antisemitism and homophobia emanating from his campaign and his followers."
The timing of the statement—coming during the middle of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland—wasn't a coincidence. USHCC President Javier Palomarez appeared on CNN Wednesday to accuse Trump of using "hate-filled rhetoric" to fuel his campaign. By contrast, Clinton will be "America's first small business president," he said.
"She grew up in a small business. She understands the challenges of small businesses. And throughout her campaign, she's engaged our organization and our business owners all over the country," Palomarez said. http://cnn.it/2afgeAV
USHCC's official endorsement barely mentions Clinton's qualifications for the job. Most of the text is instead dedicated to attacking Trump, noting his previous praise for foreign authoritarian leaders and his controversial comments about minorities.
"The Trump campaign is the antithesis of American values, and we must not allow the candidate who espouses these dangerous ideals to reach the highest elected office in the land," USHCC said. http://bit.ly/2adR2hz
